As the Creator of the Yoga Vista Academy Online Chair Yoga Dance Teacher Training Program, I have something to share that I would love your input on.
When I started creating my own Dances, I knew that an important component was the “Spiritual” aspect. That is why lyrics are just as important as the “Beat” or even the familiarity of the song. Yes, some songs are silly and fun like the Monster Mash and Jingle Bells. But, the majority of my Chair Yoga Dances deliver powerful messages of love, optimism, hope and JOY!
What I have seen evolve from those who have taken this Program is a Zumba Chair Dance concept that is missing the spiritual link.
When I see many dances that use repetitive patterns to the beat of a song without a particular theme or message, I wonder why that is. Did I not reinforce the spiritual aspect enough, or is it because it’s easier to teach moves than to deliver wisdom teachings?
We teachers have a very unique opportunity to speak to our students in ways that comfort and encourage them. If you are a trained Yoga teacher, you know that the physical aspect of Yoga is a very small part of the Yoga teachings. Just like Chair Yoga Dances, the moves are just a part of the overall experience.
What I hope to leave with my students after a Chair Yoga Dance is a feeling of peace and joy in their hearts… along with a nice body workout.
Hi Sherry,
I agree 100% about chair yoga dances being spiritual, meaningful, joyful and optimistic. I can see the importance of the lyrics when my students sing along while we dance, it can be emotional too. It is such an honor to teach this way. I consider it a gift that I get to give my students every week. I’m so grateful to you. I hope you are well! Sara Howard
